Kyle Larson

Kyle Larson and the No. 88 HendrickCars.com team were there when it counted. Running third with a handful of laps to go in Saturday's Sunoco Go Rewards 200 at Watkins Glen International, Larson was hot on the heels of leaders Ty Gibbs and William Byron when the pair made contact and spun entering the bus stop portion of the racetrack. Presented with a golden opportunity, Larson pounced and swiped the lead. Then, held off a challenge from AJ Allmendinger over the final circuits to score his first Xfinity Series win on a road course and JRM's first at Watkins Glen, leaving just three tracks on the current schedule at which the team has not yet won.

The win ties the record for single-season victories for JRM at nine, initially set in 2014. Additionally, Larson becomes the 17th driver to win for JRM and the fourth former Cup champion to claim a victory with the organization. The triumph is also the first for the No. 88 entry since team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. last went to Victory Lane in 2016 at Richmond. It also marks the first NXS win for Jason Stockert as crew chief.

Race Rundown

  • With a strong qualifying effort, Larson lined up in third for the start of the 82-lap race but was forced to the rear of the field for unapproved adjustments after qualifying. That had him sitting outside the top 25 for the green flag.
  • Early on, Larson reported he was comfortable with the balance of the No. 88, saying "the balance seems ok." He leveraged the HendrickCars.com Chevy's drivability and climbed to 10th at the halfway point of Stage One.
  • The team elected to pit with the bulk of the leaders under caution with a handful of laps to go in Stage One. This cycled them to ninth for the stage end, but they'd have track position and relatively fresh tires for the start of Stage Two.
  • Larson fired off in third for Stage Two and needed only one lap to take over the top spot, leading briefly before giving way to the No. 17 of William Byron. Larson settled into second as the laps clicked off. After a scrum through the bus stop with several competitors, he ultimately ended the stage in fifth.
  • With the start of the final stage, the bulk of the field began green-flag pit stops. The No. 88 crew was no exception, and Larson came to pit road for four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment that would provide more grip. When the stops cycled through, Larson was scored in fourth.
  • After jockeying for position, Larson secured the third spot and was parrying all podium challengers in the race's waning laps. But a caution with eight laps to go bunched the field for a dramatic restart.
  • Larson still held the third spot behind the front row of the No. 54 of Ty Gibbs and the No. 17 of Byron. Once up to speed the leaders were side by side entering the bus stop when they made contact enough to spin out, leaving the door wide open for Larson.
  • Larson jumped on the opportunity and led the ensuing five laps to the checkered while fending off an aggressive charge from Allmendinger.

Kyle Larson, driver No. 88 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet team

"I got lucky [today]. My only shot [at the win] was when the 54 (Ty Gibbs) and 17 (William Byron) got racing. I just wanted to help William down the front stretch as much as I could. Then they got battling up through the esses and I tried to help him get clear to the bus stop. They raced side by side into there and got together. The seas parted and I was able to get through. Then, with AJ (Allmendinger) behind me, just tried to hit my marks as best I could.

"It's cool to get the win here. Rick Hendrick is here, too. Wish William and I could have fought it out for the win. Either way, I'm happy to get HendrickCars.com and everybody at Hendrick Automotive Group, the Hendrick Engine Shop and JR Motorsports into Victory Lane. Pretty iconic number so it's cool to get a win with the No. 88."

Noah Gragson

Noah Gragson brought home a respectable fourth-place finish in Saturday's Sunoco Go Rewards 200 from Watkins Glen International for the NASCAR Xfinity Series. It was the No. 9 Bass Pro Shops / TrueTimber / Black Rifle Coffee team's series-leading 12th top-five finish of the season and third in the last four races.

Race Rundown No. 9

  • Gragson took the green flag in 16th and wrestled with a loose condition early on, like many competitors. Still, he moved up the scoring pylon to eighth at the halfway mark in Stage One.
  • The No. 9 pitted with most of the field just prior to the conclusion of Stage One for four tires and fuel. With several competitors staying out for track position, Gragson concluded the opening stage in 11th.
  • Cycling to sixth for the start of Stage Two, Gragson went to work fine tuning his road racing skills around the 2.45-mile facility. The team reported that Gragson was attacking the course well but emphasized the importance of getting all he could out of Turn 1. Gragson improved two positions to finish out Stage Two in fourth.
  • During the stage-ending caution, Gragson commented that the No. 9's handling was right where it needed to be. "It feels pretty good," he said. "I don't want to hurt it."
  • Gragson climbed to third during the opening laps of the final stage just prior to green-flag pit stops. With a solid balance in their car, the team took only four tires and fuel for the run to the finish.
  • Jockeying for position over the waning laps, Gragson drifted to sixth, but came on strong in the later circuits, setting himself up to avoid the melee at the front of the field and improve two positions to fourth prior to the checkered flag.

Noah Gragson, driver No. 9 Bass Pro Shops/TrueTimber®/Black Rifle Coffee Company Chevrolet team

"It seems like road course racing in Xfinity has gotten a lot harder, especially with the Cup guys running it. It's a challenge because everybody's so good. We were 16th in qualifying. To be able to run in the top five there at the end of the race - all through the third stage - and come home with top five is really big for us. This is one of my worse road courses, but a good chance for us to build and get better as a team. Obviously, you want to win but if you can't do that a top five is good result."

Sam Mayer

Sam Mayer finished sixth in Saturday's NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Watkins Glen International. After an uneventful opening stage in the No. 1 Accelerate Professional Talent Solutions Chevrolet, Mayer ran into trouble at the bus stop in both of the remaining stages. He battled back after both incidents, however, to pick up his 12th top 10 of the season.

Race Rundown

  • Mayer started the 82-lap event in seventh following Saturday morning's qualifying session. During Stage One, the Wisconsin native worked his way up to the fifth position before the second caution of the day came out on lap 16. Crew chief Taylor Moyer called the young driver to pit road for four tires and fuel.
  • Mayer returned to the track in the 25th position as the green flag was displayed with only two laps remaining in the stage. During a hectic final lap, Mayer skipped the bus stop in order to avoid a wreck just ahead of him. After serving the stop-and-go penalty for missing the chicane, Mayer ended Stage One in 28th.
  • After keep the Accelerate Professional Talent Solutions Chevrolet on track during the stage break, Mayer began Stage Two in 19th. He worked his way back into the top 10 prior the caution coming out on lap 28 for Alex Labbe.
  • Running 10th in Stage Two, Mayer once again ran into trouble in the bus stop as he went off course on lap 34. By the time he got going again, Mayer was scored in the 30th position. With focus he was able to start working his way back through the field before the stage ended and finished it out in 22nd.
  • Mayer continued his march through the field as the final stage began, driving up to 14th before green-flag pit stops got underway. Moyer called the No. 1 to pit road on lap 52 for fuel only as they attempted to gain track position. Mayer was scored seventh after a lap-60 caution cycled the remainder of the field.
  • Despite running the remainder of the race on older tires, Mayer battled hard and crossed the line in the sixth position as the checkered flag was displayed. His finish marks his 12th top-10 finish of the year.

Sam Mayer, driver No. 1 Accelerate Professional Talent Solutions Chevrolet team

"I'm really proud of our Accelerate Professional Talent Solutions team for picking up yet another top 10. We ran into some trouble in the middle portion of the race, but were able to get some track position back and get a better finish. We've continued to show resiliency all season when things aren't going well and it's a testament to everyone's hard work on this No. 1 team."

Josh Berry

Josh Berry, driver of the No. 8 Tire Pros Chevrolet, battled to a hard-fought ninth-place finish in Saturday afternoon's NASCAR Xfinity Series event at Watkins Glen International. After qualifying 17th and consistently running inside of the top 10 for most of the event, Berry went on to race to his 13th top-10 finish of the 2022 season.

Race Rundown

  • Berry and the No. 8 Tire Pros Chevrolet qualified in the 17th position during Saturday morning's qualifying session. Berry raced into 13th before the first caution flew on lap four.
  • Racing around 14th following the restart, Berry remained there until a lap-15 caution period allowed the Tire Pros team to play a little strategy as they brought the No. 8 to pit road for four tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment to help the front turn through the corners.
  • Restarting from 17th due to varying strategies, Berry narrowly avoided an incident through the bus stop and was forced to come to a complete stop for cutting the course. Rejoining the race in the 22nd position, Berry remained there until the green-and-white checkered waved on lap 20 to end Stage One.
  • Berry and the No. 8 restarted from the 14th position following the stage break and raced his way to 12th before a lap-30 caution period bunched the field back together. Following the restart, Berry joined the top 10 and raced into seventh before the green-and-white checkered waved to end Stage Two on lap 40 to earn four stage points.
  • Remaining on track during the stage break, Berry restarted from the sixth position and joined the top five immediately following the green flag. Berry brought the No. 8 to pit road under green on lap 52 for four tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment.
  • The field was slowed once again on lap 58 as Berry ran in the 13th position. Staying on track, Berry restarted sixth as the front-runners were forced to pit for fuel. Running in the seventh position once back under way, Berry remained there through a lap-74 caution period.
  • Receiving damage during the final restart, Berry pushed on to finish in the ninth position to earn his 13th top-10 finish of the season.

Josh Berry, driver No. 8 Tire Pros Chevrolet team

"We had a really good Tire Pros Chevrolet towards the end of the race and it showed as we were able to stay inside the top five and with the leaders. The damage on the last restart really slowed us down and was like a parachute on the car or we would have had a lot better of a finish at the end."

Justin Allgaier

Justin Allgaier had high hopes of a solid performance on Saturday at Watkins Glen International, but his day in the No. 7 BRANDT Professional Agriculture Chevrolet ended after contact with the barriers at the top of the Esses just four laps into the Sunoco Go Rewards 200. The damage sustained in the crash was enough to end the race for Allgaier, who was scored 38th at the finish.

Race Rundown

  • In qualifying, Allgaier finished fourth in Group B to lock the BRANDT Professional Agriculture team into the final round, but a mechanical problem did not allow the team to vie for the pole. After being posted 10th, crew chief Jason Burdett and the rest of the team were forced to change parts, which put the team at the tail of the field for initial start.
  • When the green flag waved for the 82-lap event, Allgaier was on the move, coming from the back to 24th position at the end of the first lap. He advanced one position on each of the next two laps to run 21st and was 20th on lap 4. Exiting Turn 2, another car missed the entry to Turn 3 ahead of him, forcing Allgaier to the outside into the right-hander at Turn 3.
  • The rear of Allgaier's BRANDT Professional Agriculture Chevrolet slid to the right and he spun, going head-on into the Armco barriers at the exit. Allgaier got it going and continued on toward the pit lane, but was forced to stop before he reached pit entry. The damage was too severe to fix in the time allotted under NASCAR's Damaged Vehicle Policy, and the Illinois native was forced to retire in 38th position.
  • The finish cost Allgaier and the No. 7 team one position in the driver standings to third, 70 behind the leader. Allgaier has won three times this season and is safely in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs.

Justin Allgaier, driver No. 7 BRANDT Professional Agriculture Chevrolet team

"Unfortunately, I put myself in a bad situation as we entered the Esses and put myself to the outside of a competitor who missed the apex at corner entry. I assumed the momentum I had would get our Brandt Professional Agriculture Camaro clear and be able to file in single-file and complete the pass. Between being off line and the dirty race track, the car got out from underneath me. That section of track is very narrow and very, very fast, resulting in an impact that was substantial and ultimately ended our day. I hate it for everyone on the BRANDT No. 7 team and everyone at JR Motorsports. I think we had a car capable of not only getting a good finish, but had a great shot at battling for a victory. We will regroup and move on to next week in Daytona."
